I blogged on Thursday about taking 2 animals into the shed, so that I could keep an eye on them. They both received treatment for different problems on Thursday and Friday but saw little improvement since then, so I phoned the vet first thing this morning.
He couldn’t come until much later on in the day, which was fine as I had to go to work!
First of all the Hogg. One of last year’s lambs. It was blind, with both pupils fully dilated. I’d done a few tests, as did the vet. No sight in either eye. He says it’s some kind of brain damage that affects the eyes. He rattled off a few diseases, the only one I remember is meningitis. Some of these illnesses could be caused by goose poo – something that there is an abundant supply of just now!
The lamb might recover, but no guarantee. Depending on what it is, it may not be allowed to enter they food chain. We’ll cross that bridge when we have to, should it get its sight back.
I was going to blog about the Gimmer that was beside the Hogg in the pen, but I went outside to take a picture of her for the blog, and she had gone and died on me. Devastated. She had 3/4 jags from the vet but had faded fast over the weekend. Worst winter ever. He suspected it may have been fluke to blame. They were drenched for scanning 6 weeks ago but must have picked it up again since. Just gutted.
Sounds very hard at the moment. Sorry to hear that.
Your having a tough time with them this winter Sweeny, hope your luck improves with the lambing, feeling a bit warmer today fortunatly. x
